Afghanistan-Germany Relations Since 1922
Afghanistan and Germany established formal diplomatic relations in 1922, marking the beginning of a long-standing and cooperative partnership. Germany was one of the first Western countries to recognize Afghanistan’s sovereignty and has since played a key role in its development.
During the 20th century, Germany supported Afghanistan in various fields, including education, infrastructure, and health, notably through the establishment of schools, hospitals, and technical institutes. This relationship deepened after Afghanistan’s independence, with Germany often acting as a neutral and reliable partner in times of political change.
Following 2001, Germany actively contributed to Afghanistan’s reconstruction, becoming one of the largest international donors, particularly in security, education, and governance. This support included contributions to NATO missions and development projects.
The bond between the two nations reflects a shared commitment to cultural exchange, economic cooperation, and mutual respect for sovereignty, underscoring nearly a century of diplomatic relations.
